Universal Battery Charger

KiCadESP32Embedded C

Project Overview

The project for the final integrative assignment is a universal battery charger capable of charging a wide variety of batteries. To accommodate a large number of potential configurations, both the charging voltage and current can be selected according to the requirements of each battery. Different chemical compositions require different charging profiles; the goal is to support charging batteries made with the following chemistries: Li-ion, LiPo, LiFePO4, SLA, AGM, Gel, NiMH, and NiCd.

To implement this project, an ESP32 microcontroller will be used alongside an INA219 current and voltage sensor dedicated to monitoring the state of charge, a temperature sensor formed by a fixed resistor and the battery’s thermistor, a PWM-controlled buck converter responsible for generating the required voltage and current at each stage, and a switched power circuit for controlled battery discharge. An OLED display will be used to present information to the user.
